The son of Rev. Abe Nelson and Sarah Nelson, Pastor Ernie grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. After graduating from Northside High School, he entered the United States Air Force where he served as an Avionics Electronics Technician and Master Instructor. It was in the USAF that he met his wonderful wife Julie. Julie grew up in Canada. After graduating high school, she too joined the USAF and they met at Biloxi AFB. After being assigned to Blytheville AFB in Blytheville, AR, they were married in 1982. Their Air force duties carried them to several states where they served in SBC churches in the areas of children, youth, evangelism and outreach.

While stationed in Abilene, TX, their son Matthew was born. While assigned to Dyess AFB, there, pastor Ernie answered the Lord's call on his life to surrender to the Gospel ministry. After leaving the Air Force with as a decorated veteran with an honorable discharge, he entered the New orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he received a bachelors and a Master of Divinity degree.

As a pastor, Bro. Ernie has served churches in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri as well as his present position as pastor of Woodland Heights Baptist Church.

Pastor Ernie and wife Julie have one son, Matthew, who is married to the former Leslie Holloway of Kennett, MO.

His favorite activities are to spend time with his wife Julie, son Matthew and daughter-in-law, Leslie. When he is not involved in pastoral, association, or ABSC executive board duties, you might catch him on Facebook or in the woods of the Buffalo National River.
